Russian and Iranian officials have held high-level discussions focusing heavily on Iran’s nuclear programme, alongside broader regional security and maritime issues.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov spoke by phone with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, according to a release issued on Saturday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia.

A key part of their conversation centred on Iran’s nuclear energy programme and ongoing diplomatic efforts surrounding it.

The two ministers exchanged views on prospects for reducing tensions and achieving stability in the Middle East, with particular attention to negotiations and political solutions linked to nuclear-related concerns. Russia reiterated its backing for continued mediation efforts and stressed support for a diplomatic path aimed at long-term agreements.

In addition to nuclear issues, the discussion also touched on freedom of navigation and the movement of Russian vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global energy and trade flows.

The talks follow a recent meeting on 27 April between Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi and Russian President Vladimir Putin in St Petersburg, where nuclear cooperation and regional developments were also addressed.

Senior officials from both sides, including Russia’s Sergei Lavrov and intelligence and diplomatic advisers, took part in that meeting.

According to Russian state media RIA Novosti, Putin reaffirmed Moscow’s commitment to strengthening strategic relations with Iran and supporting efforts to achieve peace and stability in the region. He also referenced receiving a message from Iran’s leadership, underscoring continued high-level communication.

The latest discussions highlight the growing importance of Iran’s nuclear programme in Russia-Iran diplomacy, as both countries continue coordinating their positions amid shifting geopolitical tensions.
