Gas supply has been disrupted in several upscale areas of Dhaka after a pipeline of Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company was damaged during excavation work carried out by the Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA) on the Gulshan-Badda Link Road.
According to an emergency notice issued by Titas Gas and circulated by the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources on Sunday, the damage to the pipeline forced authorities to immediately shut down nearby valves as a precautionary measure. The step was taken to prevent any potential leakage, fire hazards, or other safety risks while emergency repair operations begin.
As a result, gas supply has been suspended in Gulshan, Banani, Baridhara, and adjoining areas, causing inconvenience to residents and commercial users in the affected zones. The notice expressed regret for the disruption and assured that restoration work is ongoing.
Speaking to the media, Kazi Mohammad Saidul Hasan, general manager (Operations) of Titas Gas, said the main transmission line had to be shut down following the incident, which led to a temporary interruption of supply across multiple neighbourhoods.
He explained that excavation work by WASA was underway in the area when the gas pipeline was accidentally damaged. Repair teams have already been deployed, and efforts are in progress to restore normal supply as quickly as possible.
He further noted that while the capital’s overall gas supply remains adequate, some areas continue to experience low pressure issues. He attributed this partly to illegal gas connections, saying that even after disconnections, the problem persists. He urged stronger governmental support to effectively address the issue.
