The government of Bangladesh has revised electricity purchase rates for two major state-run power plants as part of efforts to align energy costs with current fuel market conditions.
The approval came on Thursday at the 20th meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP), held at the Bangladesh Secretariat with Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury in the chair.
Sources concerned said that the revised tariffs apply to two power stations operated by the North-West Power Generation Company Limited (NWPGCL) - the Sirajganj 225MW Combined Cycle Power Plant (Unit-2) and the Bheramara 410MW Combined Cycle Power Plant.
The Power Division submitted six proposals to the committee during the meeting, with the tariff restructuring proposals receiving particular importance. The revised rates were approved considering prevailing domestic and international fuel price trends.
Under the new structure, electricity generated from gas at the Sirajganj plant will be purchased at 4.513 US cents per kilowatt-hour, equivalent to Tk5.541 per unit. For electricity generated using high-speed diesel (HSD), the approved tariff has been fixed at 19.298 US cents per kWh, or Tk23.698.
For the Bheramara 410 MW power plant, the gas-based tariff has been re-fixed at 3.7869 US cents per kWh, equivalent to Tk4.6503. Meanwhile, the HSD-based tariff has been set at 16.8540 US cents per kWh, or Tk20.6967.
Officials concerned said the revised pricing structure is intended to ensure uninterrupted electricity procurement and maintain operational sustainability of the plants amid fluctuating fuel costs.
