Tamil Nadu’s newly sworn-in Chief Minister Film Star C Joseph Vijay has placed energy relief at the centre of his first executive decision, announcing a major electricity subsidy scheme soon after taking office on Sunday.

As part of his inaugural orders, Vijay directed that households across the state be provided up to 200 units of electricity free of cost. The move is expected to ease financial pressure on consumers and forms the key energy-related initiative in his early governance agenda.

The announcement came shortly after Vijay, leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), was sworn in following a closely contested assembly election. His government secured a majority with support from allied parties after days of political uncertainty.

While energy support dominated his first decision, Vijay also outlined broader governance priorities. He said his administration would focus on essential public needs such as education, health services, water supply, and livelihood support for farmers and fishermen.

In his address, Vijay emphasised responsible fiscal management, stating that the state’s financial condition required careful handling. He referred to an estimated debt burden of around Rs10 lakh crore projected by March 2027 and said public funds would be safeguarded from misuse.

He also pledged that his government would not make unrealistic promises and would ensure transparency in administration.

Alongside energy relief measures, he announced steps to strengthen internal security, including action against drug-related activities and enhanced safety mechanisms for women.

Vijay’s cabinet, which includes a mix of political allies and professionals, is set to face a floor test in the Tamil Nadu Assembly before 13 May, which will confirm the stability of his newly formed government.
