Prime Minister’s Defence Adviser Brig Gen (retd) Dr AKM Shamsul Islam has stressed that nuclear security has become a crucial component of Bangladesh’s national security framework amid growing global concerns over terrorism, cyber threats and technological vulnerabilities.
He made the remarks while delivering a special lecture at the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) in Dhaka Cantonment on Wednesday, according to a press release issued by the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR).
Addressing teachers and students of MIST’s Nuclear Security and Engineering Department, the adviser said nuclear security should not be viewed only as a technical or scientific matter, but as an issue closely tied to state responsibility, international obligations and strategic national interests.
Speaking on the topic “Nuclear Security: National Responsibility Under International Commitment and Its Implications on National Security,” he highlighted the growing importance of safeguarding nuclear facilities worldwide as geopolitical tensions and evolving security threats continue to increase.
Dr Shamsul Islam said Bangladesh remains committed to maintaining international standards in the peaceful use of nuclear technology and is working to strengthen its overall nuclear safety and security culture.
He also praised the role of the Bangladesh Army in ensuring security at the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, saying the force has been carrying out its responsibilities through coordinated measures and professional expertise.
Following the lecture, the defence adviser exchanged views with students and faculty members and responded to various questions related to nuclear security and national preparedness.
He later visited several technology-based projects developed by MIST students, including robotics and drone innovations, the ISPR release added.
