Bangladesh is making steady progress towards establishing a sustainable, green economy and achieving complete energy independence, the Prime Minister has announced.

Speaking on Sunday morning at the opening ceremony of a new rooftop solar initiative at the national parliament building, the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman emphasised that the country is firmly committed to embracing low-carbon alternatives.

The newly installed one-megawatt on-grid solar array represents far more than a simple electricity generation facility, according to the Prime Minister. Instead, it serves as a highly visible statement of intent regarding the nation’s long-term environmental and infrastructural trajectory.

Tarique Rahman, who also chairs the governing Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), noted that the famous complex, originally designed by the renowned modernist architect Louis Kahn, stands as a monumental symbol of Bangladeshi democracy. By retrofitting the historic rooftop with modern photovoltaic technology, the government intends to demonstrate that its commitment to green policy is backed by tangible domestic action.

At the Prime Minister's request, the Speaker of the Parliament, Major (retired) Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram, officially cut the ribbon to mark the renewable energy system as operational.

The project is expected to cushion the legislative complex from conventional grid demands while offering a blueprint for future public sector infrastructure projects across the country. As Bangladesh looks to reduce its reliance on volatile imported fossil fuels, state planners are increasingly viewing large-scale urban rooftop installations as a viable path toward securing national grid resilience.
