The government of Bangladesh has approved separate proposals to import three cargoes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the spot market and 70,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser to ensure uninterrupted supply of energy and agricultural inputs in the country.
The approvals were given at the 23rd meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP) for 2026, held on Sunday at the Cabinet Division conference room in Dhaka. The meeting was chaired by Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, where three procurement proposals were reviewed and approved.
According to officials, the Energy and Mineral Resources Division’s proposal to import three LNG cargoes from the international spot market was approved under Rule 105(3)(Ka) of the Public Procurement Rules, 2025. The LNG shipments are scheduled for delivery on 15-16 June, 21-22 June and 25-26 June 2026, corresponding to the 23rd, 24th and 25th consignments.
The total estimated cost of the LNG procurement, including Advance Income Tax (AIT), stands at Tk2,330.82 crore. Of the three cargoes, two will be supplied by Posco International Corporation and one by TotalEnergies through its Gas & Power division in the United Kingdom.
In addition, the Ministry of Industries proposal to import 30,000 metric tonnes of bagged granular urea fertiliser under the 15th lot from Karnaphuli Fertiliser Company Limited (KAFCO) was also approved. The fertiliser will be procured during the 2025-26 fiscal year to maintain steady supply for the agricultural sector.
The total cost of the urea import has been set at Tk254.52 crore, with a per-tonne price of US$688.375, including FOB and bagging charges.
Separately, the Ministry of Agriculture’s proposal to import 40,000 metric tonnes of DAP fertiliser under the 12th (optional fourth) lot from OCP Nutricrops was also approved under a state-level agreement with the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC).
The DAP fertiliser import is estimated to cost Tk434.66 crore at a rate of US$881.67 per metric tonne, according to officials.
