The government has instructed all shopping malls, markets, and retail outlets across Bangladesh to close by 7pm as part of renewed efforts to reduce electricity consumption nationwide.

Under the latest directive, illuminated billboards must also be switched off by 7pm. In addition, fairs, trade exhibitions, and cultural events have been asked to conclude their activities within the same timeframe.

The order was issued on Monday by the Coordination-2 unit of the Power Division and has been sent to city corporation mayors and administrators, divisional commissioners, and deputy commissioners across the country for immediate implementation.

Officials said the 7pm closing rule had previously been enforced under instructions from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman as part of a broader energy-saving initiative. However, the restriction was temporarily relaxed ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha period, allowing businesses to remain open until 10pm to accommodate increased festive shopping activity.

With the special Eid-related relaxation now expired, authorities have reinstated the earlier rule requiring all commercial establishments to close by 7pm.

The Power Division also reiterated that all forms of outdoor lighting, including advertising billboards, must be turned off by the deadline to help reduce electricity demand during peak hours.

The same instruction applies to ongoing fairs, trade fairs, and cultural programmes, which must also end by early evening.

The government has requested local administrations and relevant authorities to ensure strict compliance with the directive across all regions.

Officials said the move is part of broader energy management measures aimed at reducing pressure on the national power grid and promoting more efficient electricity use during periods of high demand.
