In a move aimed at reducing fuel consumption and improving energy efficiency, the government has instructed all ministries, divisions and field-level administrations to prioritise virtual platforms for official meetings, workshops, training programmes and other administrative activities.
The directive was issued on Tuesday through a circular from the Field Administration Coordination Wing of the Cabinet Division, citing the evolving global energy situation and the need to conserve fuel while ensuring uninterrupted government operations.
According to the circular, ministries and government offices have been asked to take necessary measures to conduct official activities through digital platforms whenever possible. The government believes greater use of virtual communication can significantly reduce travel-related fuel consumption while maintaining administrative efficiency.
The instructions specifically emphasise connecting field-level officials to programmes through online platforms. Under the new arrangement, district-level participants should join divisional programmes virtually, while upazila-level officials should participate online in district-level events.
The Cabinet Division, however, acknowledged that some activities may require physical attendance. In such cases, authorities have been directed to assess the necessity of in-person events and make decisions based on proper justification.
The circular has been sent to all ministries, divisions, divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners and upazila nirbahi officers with instructions to ensure effective implementation.
Officials said the initiative reflects the government's broader efforts to promote fuel conservation and expand the use of information technology in public administration. The move is also expected to reduce operational costs and improve coordination among government offices across the country.
The latest directive replaces an earlier circular issued on 22 April, which has now been formally withdrawn. Authorities view the updated policy as an important step towards more efficient, technology-driven governance amid global energy challenges.
