The government of Bangladesh has approved the procurement of five cargoes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from suppliers in Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Singapore as part of efforts to address increasing domestic energy demand.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase held at the Secretariat on Wednesday, chaired by Finance Adviser Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury.

Sources concerned said three of the LNG cargoes will be procured through the Request for Quotation (RFQ)-International method under Rule 105(3)(a) of the Public Procurement Rules 2025, following a proposal submitted by the Energy and Mineral Resources Division.

Under this arrangement, the 26th LNG shipment is scheduled for delivery between 26-27 June, the 27th between 30 June and 1 July, and the 28th between 6-7 July 2026. Of these, one cargo will be supplied by Singapore-based BP Singapore Pte Ltd, while two will come from UK-based TotalEnergies Gas and Power Ltd. The combined cost of these three shipments has been estimated at Tk2,372.21 crore, including taxes.

In addition, the committee approved the direct purchase of two more LNG cargoes from Switzerland in 2026. The final cost for these two shipments has not yet been fixed.

Officials noted that Switzerland-based SOCAR Trading SA has expressed interest in supplying LNG under both short- and long-term government-to-government (G2G) arrangements, as well as investing in a Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU).

The government had earlier given general approval for LNG imports from SOCAR Trading SA under a G2G framework, with pricing linked to the Japan-Korea Marker (JKM) plus USD 0.125 per MMBtu. Each cargo is expected to contain around 3.36 million MMBtu of LNG.
