Bangladesh and Russia have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in the energy sector, with both sides expressing interest in expanding collaboration in nuclear power, electricity generation and broader energy development.
The emphasis came during a meeting between Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow on Monday, according to a statement from Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During the talks, both ministers discussed ways to further enhance energy partnership alongside other areas of bilateral cooperation. Dr Khalilur is currently on a three-day official visit to Russia at the invitation of his Russian counterpart. The visit is his first bilateral trip abroad since being elected President of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov highlighted the long-standing energy cooperation between the two countries and expressed optimism about expanding future collaboration. He noted that Russia values its partnership with Bangladesh, particularly in the development of major energy projects.
Lavrov also pointed to the upcoming 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries and said Moscow expects further progress in energy and related technical fields.
Dr Khalilur Rahman thanked Russia for its continued cooperation, particularly in the energy sector, and said Bangladesh remains committed to strengthening this strategic partnership.
He also highlighted the importance of ongoing collaboration in nuclear energy development, referring to the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant as a key symbol of bilateral energy cooperation.
He said Bangladesh aims to deepen engagement with Russia in energy production, capacity building and technology transfer as part of its broader efforts to ensure long-term energy security.
The meeting also touched on global energy challenges and the importance of stable cooperation in the sector amid shifting geopolitical conditions.
Officials said both sides agreed to continue close coordination on energy-related initiatives while also expanding cooperation in other strategic areas.
