Bangladesh is set to import 8,000 tonnes of diesel from India in June to meet rising seasonal demand during the Aman cultivation period.

The import plan comes after Bangladesh brought in 25,000 tonnes of refined diesel in April, 10,000 tonnes in March, and 8,000 tonnes in May from its neighbouring country, reflecting a continued fuel procurement arrangement through an established cross-border supply route.

Deputy Manager (Operations) of Meghna Petroleum Limited Md Habibur Rahman confirmed the information on Tuesday, saying that the upcoming shipment will be aligned with agricultural demand patterns, particularly in the northwestern regions where diesel consumption increases significantly during the irrigation season.

He said the government intends to import 8,000 tonnes of diesel in June, with demand expected to remain steady throughout the Aman season. He noted that around 2,000 tonnes of diesel are required weekly to support irrigation activities for the current crop cycle.

He added that the fuel imports are part of an ongoing arrangement under which Bangladesh has been importing refined petroleum from India since 2021. The supply is transported through a pipeline from Numaligarh Refinery Limited in Assam to Bangladesh’s Parbatipur depot.

The May shipments were delivered in two phases through the same pipeline system, ensuring a continuous supply chain for energy and agricultural needs.

Officials concerned said the arrangement plays an important role in stabilising fuel availability during peak agricultural periods, particularly when irrigation demand rises sharply in rural farming regions.
