Bangladesh and Russia have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in the nuclear energy sector, with discussions focusing on the progress of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant and prospects for future collaboration.
Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman held talks with Alexey Likhachev, head of Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom, in Moscow on Tuesday during his three-day official visit to Russia.
According to Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting reviewed ongoing work at the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant and examined opportunities to expand bilateral cooperation in the field of nuclear energy. The two sides discussed the project's implementation progress as Bangladesh prepares to enter a new phase in its energy development.
Officials noted that the plant’s first power unit was commissioned on 28 April, while the second unit is also expected to begin operations later this year. Once fully operational, the Rooppur facility is projected to contribute up to 10 per cent of Bangladesh’s total electricity generation capacity, making it one of the country’s most significant energy infrastructure projects.
Russian officials described the Rooppur project as the flagship initiative of Bangladesh-Russia cooperation, highlighting its role in establishing the foundation of Bangladesh’s nuclear energy industry. They also emphasised Russia’s contribution to technology transfer and the training of Bangladeshi professionals needed to operate and manage the country's emerging nuclear sector.
During his visit, Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur also met Senator of the Russian Federation Konstantin Kosachev. The discussions covered a range of bilateral and international issues, with both sides expressing their commitment to deepening the longstanding friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
Prime Minister’s Adviser on Foreign Affairs Humayun Kobir accompanied the foreign minister at both meetings.
The talks reflect growing cooperation between Dhaka and Moscow in the energy sector, with nuclear power expected to play an increasingly important role in Bangladesh’s long-term energy security and electricity diversification strategy.
