Bangladesh is set to make significant progress in its power sector. The new Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is expected to supply its first 300 megawatts (MW) of electricity to the national grid by late August 2026.
Fakir Mahbub Anam, the Minister for Science and Technology, shared this news during a parliament session on Sunday. He gave the update while answering a written question from Mostafizur Rahman Babul, the Member of Parliament for Jamalpur-3. Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad led the session.
Fakir Mahbub Anam told the parliament that the project has reached a crucial stage after a long period of planning and building. The plant is currently going through its final testing and startup phase. The minister explained that the startup is a highly complex and careful process that must happen right before the plant starts producing electricity.
Sharing a clear timeline, the minister said he expects the first 300MW of power to flow into the grid by the end of August. Once connected, it will be the first time Bangladesh uses nuclear energy for its national power supply.
“This will mark the beginning of a new chapter in the history of Bangladesh’s power sector,” Fakir Mahbub Anam said.
