Bangladesh hopes to see a reduction in power cuts after two electricity plants were brought back online by authorities. This has increased national energy production and decreased load shedding, providing some relief to households and businesses.
The temporary closure of these two units over the weekend had created a huge load on the national grid, Energy Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood told Parliament on Monday. On Sunday, this sudden decline in power forced authorities to cut electricity in several areas to protect the wider system.
Iqbal Hassan Mahmood noted that while the weekend had been challenging, the situation has now stabilised. He shared that the country is currently producing 14,500 megawatts of electricity. With public demand sitting at 14,839 megawatts, there is now only a minor shortage of 339 megawatts.
Because this energy gap has been significantly reduced, the Energy Minister confirmed that power cuts will be much less frequent than they were the previous day. He assured lawmakers that technical teams are working hard to clear this remaining shortage and prevent any further disruptions for consumers.
Over the last few years, Bangladesh has faced regular power cuts. These often happen during periods of high heat when public demand spikes or when fuel shortages and technical faults limit how much power the country can make.
Government officials state that getting the two broken units running again has removed the immediate danger to the national grid. Authorities will continue to closely watch both public demand and power generation levels. Their goal is to completely close the remaining energy gap and maintain a steady, reliable electricity supply across the entire country.
