Bangladesh expects to begin generating electricity from municipal waste at the Aminbazar landfill in Savar in November 2028, marking a significant step in the country’s efforts to improve waste management while expanding alternative energy sources.
The announcement was made by State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam after he inspected operations at the Aminbazar landfill recently.
Speaking to journalists following the visit, the minister said, "The project had already secured environmental clearance from the Department of Environment, and all necessary preparations had been completed to move ahead with the planned launch in November 2028.”
He also said, "The government would not be required to invest public funds in the project," explaining that the entire waste-to-energy facility would be financed by the foreign company responsible for its implementation.
The initiative is expected to convert municipal waste collected at the Aminbazar landfill in Baliarpur, Savar, into electricity, supporting efforts to reduce landfill volumes while producing power from an alternative energy source.
Officials have previously identified waste-to-energy technology as a way to address growing urban waste while contributing to Bangladesh’s broader environmental and energy objectives.
Also accompanying the inspection were State Minister for Forest, Environment and Climate Change Sheikh Faridul Islam, Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan and other government officials.
If completed on schedule, the Aminbazar project will become one of Bangladesh’s key waste-to-energy facilities, demonstrating how landfill waste can be used to generate electricity without direct financial investment from the government.
