Bangladesh will reduce fuel prices in phases whenever market conditions allow, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit has said, pointing to the government’s recent decision to lower the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in response to changes in global markets.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with officials of the Palli Bidyut Samity at the district circuit house on Friday, Amit said, "The government remained committed to adjusting fuel prices whenever there was scope to do so.”
“The price of fuel will be reduced step by step whenever there is an opportunity,” he also said, adding that the reduction in LPG cylinder prices reflected developments in international markets.
The minister noted that around 98 per cent of Bangladesh’s LPG supply is imported and that the sector is entirely dependent on private operators, making domestic prices closely linked to global trends.
Addressing concerns over electricity services, Amit stated, "The Power Division was working to maintain a stable electricity supply during the ongoing summer season, when demand typically increases.”
He also responded to complaints about inaccurate electricity bills, saying complaint centres had been established at every electricity office to deal with customer concerns.
“I have instructed officials to ensure that complaints are addressed promptly, as reports of billing irregularities have been received from several areas,” he added.
The minister urged power sector officials to place greater emphasis on public service and to respond more effectively to consumer concerns.
During the visit, Anindya Islam also referred to the government’s environmental commitment, saying Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s election manifesto included a pledge to plant 250 million trees over five years.
He further added that a nationwide tree-planting campaign had now been launched to fulfil that commitment, with schools and both public and private institutions taking part in the programme.
Among those attending the event were Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ashek Hasan, District BNP President Advocate Saberul Haque Sabu, District Council Administrator Delwar Hossain Khokon, Superintendent of Police Syed Rafiqul Islam, Sadar Upazila Executive Officer Shahriar Haque, and representatives from Sonali Bank and the Jatiyatabadi Bankers Association.
