Gas consumers across Bangladesh are likely to experience reduced pressure after rough weather in the Bay of Bengal interrupted liquefied natural gas (LNG) unloading operations at the country’s floating import terminal, state-owned Petrobangla said on Monday.

The disruption has reduced the supply of regasified LNG (RLNG) from the Moheshkhali Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) by around 300 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd), according to a notice issued by the national oil and gas company.

Petrobangla said unfavourable sea conditions prevented a scheduled LNG cargo from beginning unloading operations, leading to the unexpected decline in gas availability.

As a result, consumers across the country, including households, commercial establishments and industrial users, are expected to face lower-than-normal gas pressure until the situation improves.

The company said the disruption would continue until weather conditions in the Bay of Bengal become favourable enough for the delayed LNG cargo to safely resume unloading.

Bangladesh relies heavily on imported LNG to supplement domestic natural gas production, with floating storage and regasification units at Moheshkhali playing a key role in supplying fuel to the national gas transmission network.

Temporary interruptions to LNG deliveries can reduce the volume of gas available for distribution, particularly when adverse weather affects offshore operations.

Petrobangla apologised to consumers for the temporary inconvenience and said efforts would continue to restore normal gas supply as soon as maritime conditions allow unloading activities to restart safely.

The company did not specify when full supply would resume, saying the timeline would depend on improvements in weather conditions over the Bay of Bengal.
