Bangladesh's LNG cooperation with Türkiye could expand further as the government seeks to strengthen energy security, attract foreign investment and deepen bilateral trade under a broader partnership between the two countries.

During a meeting at the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources on Wednesday, Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood highlighted the importance of government-to-government (G2G) cooperation in helping reduce the trade imbalance between Bangladesh and Türkiye. He also welcomed continued Turkish investment and reaffirmed the government's commitment to expanding Türkiye's role in Bangladesh's energy sector, including the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The discussions took place during a courtesy call by Ramis Şen, Türkiye's ambassador to Bangladesh, who led a delegation to the ministry.

Congratulating the minister on assuming office, the ambassador conveyed the continued goodwill of the Turkish government towards Bangladesh and reaffirmed Türkiye's interest in strengthening economic and energy cooperation.

Ramis Şen briefed the minister on the current state of bilateral relations, outlining Turkish investment activities and future trade plans in Bangladesh. Both sides expressed satisfaction with the steady growth in economic cooperation and discussed opportunities to further expand collaboration in the energy sector.

Strengthening LNG cooperation forms part of Bangladesh's wider strategy to diversify fuel sources, enhance energy security and ensure reliable supplies for electricity generation. The country continues to rely on imported LNG to supplement declining domestic natural gas production, making international partnerships increasingly important for maintaining stable power generation and supporting economic growth.

The Turkish delegation included Bilal Belyurt, Commercial Counsellor at the Embassy of Türkiye, and Harun Ortaç, Chief Executive Officer of United Aygaz LPG Ltd.

During the meeting, the ambassador invited Iqbal Hassan Mahmood to visit Türkiye to further strengthen bilateral relations and explore new areas of cooperation. The minister welcomed the invitation and expressed his interest in making the visit.

The latest discussions underscore the growing importance of Bangladesh-Türkiye energy ties as both countries seek to expand investment, enhance LNG cooperation and deepen long-term economic engagement in support of energy security and sustainable development.
