Hollywood star Tom Cruise is officially returning for a third instalment of the Top Gun franchise, according to an announcement made by Paramount Studios during its CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas.

The studio also confirmed that producer Jerry Bruckheimer will once again be involved in the upcoming film, continuing his long association with the blockbuster series.

The project follows the massive global success of Top Gun: Maverick (2022), which earned around $1.5 billion at the worldwide box office against a production budget of roughly $170 million. The sequel revitalised the franchise decades after the original 1986 film.

Tom Cruise first introduced the character of naval aviator Lt Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in the 1986 classic Top Gun, which became a cultural phenomenon. The story later returned 36 years after the original release with Maverick, where the character takes on a new role as a flight instructor training a new generation of elite pilots.

The 2022 film featured a strong ensemble cast including Miles Teller as Rooster, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Monica Barbaro, Danny Ramirez, Jay Ellis, Greg Tarzan Davis, Manny Jacinto, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Charles Parnell, Ed Harris and Bashir Salahuddin. Val Kilmer also appeared in a cameo role, marking his final film appearance.

Ehren Kruger, who co-wrote Top Gun: Maverick, is again attached as writer for the new film. However, Paramount has not yet announced a director for Top Gun 3. The previous instalment was directed by Joseph Kosinski, while the original 1986 film was directed by Tony Scott.

Further production details, including casting and release timeline, are expected to be revealed in the coming months.
