Actor Aamir Khan has confirmed that a sequel to the 2009 film 3 Idiots is currently in development, with director Rajkumar Hirani working on the project.

Speaking in an interview with Amar Ujala, Aamir Khan said the film is still in the writing stage but described the story as promising. “Raju is working on 3 Idiots 2 right now. I’ve heard the story, and it’s wonderful. The script still needs some work, but the story itself is really good—unusual, with the same humour as the first film. It follows the characters from 3 Idiots, picking up 10 years later,” he said.

The actor added that the screenplay is being shaped by Rajkumar Hirani and writer Abhijat Joshi, whose previous collaboration on the original film was widely praised. He said the creative team has approached the sequel with clarity and care, aiming to maintain the tone and spirit that made the first film successful.

Released in 2009, 3 Idiots became one of the most popular Hindi films of its time. It was noted for combining mainstream entertainment with commentary on education, ambition and friendship, themes that resonated strongly with audiences.

Aamir Khan indicated that the sequel will continue the story of the central characters—Rancho, Farhan and Raju—exploring their lives a decade after the events of the original film. He also acknowledged the possibility of reprising his role as Phunsukh Wangdu, the character who became central to the film’s narrative.

Although the project has generated renewed interest among fans, no timeline has been confirmed for production or release. The actor said the focus remains on refining the script before moving ahead.

Alongside this development, Aamir Khan has paused work on several other projects, including a planned biographical film on Dadasaheb Phalke. He is also currently involved in promoting his son’s upcoming film 'Ek Din'.
