Bangladesh is moving towards a major digital transformation in its film industry as the government plans to introduce a nationwide centralised e-ticketing and box office management system for cinema halls.

The initiative is aimed at bringing greater transparency, accountability and efficiency to movie ticket sales across the country while modernising the overall business structure of the film sector.

To implement the plan, the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) is preparing a development project proposal estimated at nearly Tk 50 crore.

Officials concerned said the move gained momentum after receiving strong support from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon and State Minister Yasser Khan Choudhury have reportedly expressed positive views about the initiative.

According to BFDC Managing Director Masuma Rahman Tani, work on the proposal has already been underway for around 20 days. She said the draft proposal is expected to be submitted to the ministry’s development wing before Eid-ul-Azha.

Before preparing the proposal, BFDC held discussions with cinema hall owners, film producers, directors’ associations and representatives from streaming platforms. Most stakeholders reportedly welcomed the idea, seeing it as a step towards reducing irregularities in ticket sales and improving revenue tracking.

Officials said once the proposal is submitted, it will go through ministry review before being forwarded to the Planning Commission for final approval. After approval, BFDC will begin implementing the project nationwide.

Industry insiders believe the digital system could help rebuild audience confidence, improve data collection and create a more organised business environment for Bangladesh’s cinema sector.
