The acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair has announced that Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Jaideep Ahlawat, and Jim Sarbh have joined the cast of her upcoming feature film, Amri. Based on the life of the pioneering modern artist Amrita Sher-Gil, the production features Anjali Sivaraman in the lead role.

Priyanka is also set to serve as an executive producer on the project, which is being produced in association with the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art and Miramax.

The narrative follows Sher-Gil’s journey through Hungary, France, and India during the early 20th century. Known for her bold and unconventional style, the artist was the youngest student ever admitted to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Her work frequently focused on the lives of ordinary Indian citizens, particularly women, and is credited with transforming the country’s art scene by challenging established traditions.

Nair, who co-wrote the screenplay with Clara Royer, described the artist as a lifelong influence on her cinematic vision. She stated that every film she has made over several decades has been inspired by Sher-Gil’s art, noting that the painter taught her how to see the world.

In the film, Prianka portrays Madame Azurie, while Emily Watson appears as the artist’s mother, Marie-Antoinette Gottesman, and Ahlawat plays her father, Umrao Singh Sher-Gil.

Currently in the final stages of production, filming has taken place across locations in India and Hungary. The project is produced by Samudrika Arora and Michael Nozik alongside Nair. By exploring Sher-Gil’s search for identity and her development of a unique aesthetic, Amri aims to document the life of a woman who remains a central figure in the history of Indian modernism.
