A Dhaka court on Thursday sent actor Niamot Ullah Bhuiyan, popularly known as Zaher Alvi, to jail in a case filed over the alleged abetment of the suicide of his wife Afra Ibnat Ikra.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin passed the order after the actor surrendered before the court and submitted a bail petition. The court, however, rejected his bail plea, sending him to jail following the hearing.
State prosecutor Harun Ur Rashid confirmed the development, saying the court did not grant bail and ordered that the accused be taken into custody.
According to case details, Ikra’s body was found hanging from a ceiling fan at their residence in Mirpur DOHS at around 11:45am on 28 February. Family members immediately rushed her to Kurmitola General Hospital, where attending doctors declared her dead.
Police later visited the hospital and the residence, prepared an inquest report, and collected preliminary evidence as part of the investigation into the incident.
Ikra’s maternal uncle Sheikh Tanvir Ahmed filed the case on the same day, alleging that prolonged family disputes and various forms of alleged abuse had driven his niece to take her own life. The complaint further claims that such circumstances amounted to abetment of suicide.
Following the surrender and bail hearing, the court’s decision to send Zaher Alvi to jail marks a significant development in the ongoing case, which remains under investigation.
Authorities have not yet disclosed further details regarding the next steps in the judicial process.
