A written complaint has been filed with Shahbagh Police Station against actress Meher Afroz Shawon, actress Mahiya Mahi and Shanta Farjana, accusing them of making derogatory remarks about the July Uprising and spreading propaganda through social media.
The complaint was lodged on Friday by three central leaders of the organisation Rashtra Songlap Forum, Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Moniruzzaman said on Saturday.
"Since the allegations are cyber-related, the complaint has been forwarded to the Cyber Crime Division of the Detective Branch for verification. They will investigate the matter," the officer-in-charge said.
According to police sources, the complainants requested legal action under existing laws over social media posts and video messages they alleged had insulted the July Uprising and its participants.
The complaint was submitted by Rashtra Songlap Forum Central Member Secretary ANM Ayas, Central Chief Organiser Muhammad Shah Alam Badsha and member Tuhin Farazi.
In their complaint, they described the July Uprising as a defining chapter in Bangladesh's history, saying more than 1,400 people were killed and over 30,000 others were injured during the movement.
The complainants alleged that Shanta Farjana uploaded a video to Facebook showing herself striking a July memorial with a shoe. They claimed the video insulted the memory of those who died during the movement and provoked widespread public outrage.
They also accused Meher Afroz Shawon of posting videos on social media that portrayed the July Uprising as a staged or pre-planned event and making remarks they described as derogatory towards both the movement and the state.
The complaint further alleged that Mahiya Mahi posted comments on social media mocking individuals and organisations involved in the uprising by comparing their participation to acting. The complainants argued that the remarks demeaned those who took part in the movement, including members of political parties and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
The allegations have not been independently verified, and no charges have been announced. Police said the matter is now being examined by the Detective Branch's Cyber Crime Division.
