Sam Neill, the New Zealand actor best known for playing Dr Alan Grant in the 1993 blockbuster Jurassic Park, has died in Australia at the age of 78, his family has announced.
In a statement released on Monday, the family described his death as "sudden and unexpected".
"Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life," the statement said.
Neill revealed in his 2023 memoir that he had been diagnosed with stage-three non-Hodgkin lymphoma and believed he was "possibly dying". Earlier this year, however, he said he was cancer-free after undergoing a genetic therapy that modified his immune system.
His family confirmed that he remained free of cancer at the time of his death.
"The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer-free," the statement added.
The actor was receiving treatment at St Vincent's Private Hospital in Sydney when he died, according to the family.
Neill began his acting career in the 1970s and went on to build a career spanning television and film. Alongside Jurassic Park, he appeared in Peaky Blinders, The Hunt for Red October and The Piano.
Away from acting, he also owned and operated vineyards in the Central Otago region of New Zealand's South Island.
