The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) have taken a joint initiative to protect imported raw materials and goods following the recent devastating fire at the Import Cargo Village of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

The fire incident, which took place on October 18, severely damaged the import shed, disrupting the import operations vital for the apparel sector.  To overcome the crisis and keep the export supply chain running smoothly, the two associations have moved quickly to set up a temporary ‘Rubb Hall’ warehouse at the newly constructed Terminal-3 of the airport.

The BGMEA has already awarded a contract to a supplier for the installation of the temporary facility, which will be completed in the shortest possible time, said a press release.

On October 20, BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan and BKMEA President Mohammad Hatem, along with senior leaders from both associations, met with Sk. Bashir Uddin, Adviser to the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism. The decision to launch this joint initiative was taken at that meeting to safeguard the interests of the apparel industry.

The BGMEA reaffirmed its strong commitment to maintaining uninterrupted import and export operations with the full cooperation of the government. The association expressed confidence that the joint move would effectively protect imported goods and support the continuity of Bangladesh’s export trade.
