Gobindaganj Thana has filed a case against 300 to 350 people for their alleged involvement in the killing of three cow lifters at Nasirabad village under the upazila in Gaibandha.
The case was filed on Sunday after a visit to the place of occurrence by senior officials of the district police.
According to police, a gang of cow lifters entered a cattle house owned by Abdus Salam of the village at about 2:30am on Saturday to steal the cattle.
The owner of the cattle house realised the presence of the cow lifters and began shouting to nab them. On hearing the shouting, the neighbours and locals rushed to the spot and chased them.
At one stage, three of the cattle lifters jumped into a roadside pond fearing a mass beating. Then the locals cordoned off the pond until the next morning and caught them red-handed. They also gave them a mass beating, leaving two cow lifters dead on the spot and another severely injured, who later succumbed to his injuries at the local upazila health complex.
On receiving information, a team from Gobindaganj Thana Police rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies.
Later, Gaibandha Superintendent of Police (SP) Nishat Angella, along with other senior police personnel, visited the spot.
One of the deceased cow lifters was identified as Kawsar Ali, 32, son of Malibbor Miah, of Dampara village under Shibganj upazila of Bogura district.
CID police have been trying to identify the other two cattle lifters through DNA tests, police sources said.
