BNP Vice Chairman and former Home Minister Air Vice Marshal (Retd) Altaf Hossain Chowdhury on Tuesday said that although there are groupings in politics, they stem from rivalry rather than jealousy or hatred.
“When I heard the news of my nomination, I first said Alhamdulillah. After that, we started working in the field as per the directives of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and the party’s central committee,” he said while exchanging views with reporters at his residence in the capital.
Altaf Hossain said BNP is a party with more than 2,000 qualified candidates vying for 300 seats, while some political parties do not even have suitable candidates for all constituencies. “There is no shortage of qualified and experienced candidates in BNP,” he added.
He said BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has instructed all – both those who received nominations and those who did not – to work in unity.
He added that BNP has not declared candidates for all 300 seats, as some have been kept for its alliance partners. “Many senior leaders have stepped aside from the nomination race this time, but everyone must work unitedly for the party’s nominated candidates,” he said.
After the meeting, Altaf Hossain met District BNP President Sanagshu Kutty at his office. Other district BNP leaders were also present.
Since morning, thousands of leaders and activists were seen gathering in front of the former home minister’s residence.
