Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) overnight arrested four leaders and activists of the now disbanded Awami League (AL) from different parts of the capital.

“Raids at different parts of the city yielded their arrests as part of our ongoing campaign. They included leaders of different organisations affiliated to Awami League as well,” an official familiar with the process said.

He said those who were arrested were initially accused of staging frequent “flash marches” in the capital, chanting slogans of the banned party and aiming to create a law and order situation.

DMP’s Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman confirmed the incident, adding that subsequent legal procedures, including their court production process, were underway against those arrested.

DMP, meanwhile, issued a statement naming the seven people, saying they were arrested in the 24 hours ending Thursday morning.

The arrested are: Savar Upazila Bangladesh Chhatra League’s (BCL) leader Sohanur Rahman Sohan (21), Bhatara Thana AL Vice-President Abu Sayeed alias Parvez alias Zahirul Islam (38), Kamrangirchar Ward No-57 Jubo League’s Cultural Affairs Secretary Md Ruhul Amin (28) and Kabi Nazrul Government College BCL’s former President Kazi Atiqur Rahman (50).

The DMP statement said Sohan was arrested by DB Uttara Division during a raid at Alamnagar Housing in Savar at about 8:05pm on Wednesday, while another team of DB Gulshan Division arrested Zahirul Islam from the Bhatara Police Station area at about 7:45pm on the same day.

In addition, the DB team of Lalbagh conducted a raid at Bangshal Police Station area and arrested Ruhul Amin at about 3:40pm, while another DB team of Wari Uttara Division conducted a raid at Jatrabari Police Station area and arrested Atiqur Rahman at about 2:20pm.
