Police have submitted a charge-sheet against seven individuals in connection with the murder of Shahriar Alam Shammo, a final-year student of the Institute of Education and Research (IER) at the University of Dhaka. Shammo was fatally stabbed at Suhrawardy Udyan while attempting, alongside his friends, to stop a group of drug peddlers from selling drugs in the area.

Shammo, who also served as the literature and publication secretary of the Sir AF Rahman Hall unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), was brutally attacked on 13 May 2025. His friends rushed him to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

His elder brother, Shariful Islam, filed the case with Shahbagh Police Station on 14 May.

The Investigation Officer (IO) of the Detective Branch (DB) of police, Inspector Akhter Morshed, submitted the charge-sheet on 6 November against drug dealers Mehedi Hasan, Md Rabbi alias Kobutor Rabbi, Md Ripon alias Akash, Nahid Hasan Papel, Md Hridoy Islam, Md Harunur Rashid Sohagh, and Md Robin.

Police also requested that the names of Sujon Sarkar, Tamim Hawlader, Samrat Mollik, and Palash Sardar be removed from the list of accused, as allegations against them could not be substantiated during the investigation.

According to the charge-sheet, Mehedi Hasan was the ringleader who sold ganja in the park with his associates. When Shammo and his friends asked the group to cease drug sales, the gang became agitated and plotted his murder.

The gang reportedly collected ganja from Mehedi and sold it around the Temple Gate area of Suhrawardy Udyan. Mehedi also supplied knives and tasers to his associates to use against rivals. On the day of the murder, Shammo and his friends saw Kobutor Rabbi carrying a taser while passing through the Mukto Mancho area. As Shammo tried to stop him, Rabbi fled, prompting Shammo to chase him on his motorbike.

Shammo managed to catch Rabbi near the Gol Pukur area and slapped him a couple of times. Rabbi then summoned his cohorts, and a scuffle broke out between the two groups. During the fight, Mehedi first stabbed a bystander who attempted to intervene, then struck Shammo on the chest before stabbing him in the right thigh, leaving him critically injured.

As locals rushed to the scene, Mehedi and his associates fled, police added.
