The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has offered support for a newborn girl who was abandoned at the paediatric ward of Dinajpur Medical College Hospital by an unidentified couple in their 50s, leaving a note describing themselves as “victims of circumstance.”
A BNP statement said members of its Legal Assistance Cell for Oppressed Women and Children and Health Support Cell for Oppressed Women and Children visited the hospital and assured authorities that they would provide full cooperation in offering any necessary support for the infant.
According to reports, the couple brought the baby to the paediatric ward on Thursday, identifying themselves as the child’s maternal grandparents. They left the hospital saying the mother was coming from downstairs.
The note left with the baby read: “Leaving the baby being victims of circumstance. Someone please take the baby.” It appeared to have been written by the mother, who described herself as an ill-fated woman. The brief note also stated that the baby was born on 4 November 2025 and that the accompanying bag contained some medicines for the newborn.
The BNP statement added that the two support cells were formed in line with directives from BNP’s Acting Chairman, Tarique Rahman, amid rising incidents of violence against women and children across the country earlier this year.
Dr Md Rafiqul Islam, central coordinator of the Health Support Cell and BNP’s Health Affairs Secretary, contacted the hospital’s principal and director, Professor Dr Sheikh Sadeq Ali, and Dr Fazlul Rahman, urging them to take all necessary measures to ensure the baby’s medical care and protection. On behalf of Tarique Rahman, he expressed gratitude to the hospital authorities for looking after the infant.
Members of the two cells – Dr Md Ziaul Haque, Dr Mastura Begum, Dr Nur Zaman Sarkar, and Dr Tamanna Nusrat – later visited the hospital to check on the baby’s condition.
Dr Md Rafiqul Islam and Legal Affairs Secretary Barrister Kayser Kamal serve as central coordinators of the health and legal support cells, respectively.
