A team from the Detective Branch (DB) of police has arrested five suspects, including two shooters carrying foreign pistols, in connection with the killing of top-listed criminal Tarif Saif Mamun in broad daylight in Old Dhaka’s Sutrapur area on Monday. The arrests were made from Narsingdi and Dhaka on Tuesday night.
“Tarif Saif Mamun was killed over enmity with another criminal, Roni, as they competed to establish supremacy in the underworld,” Additional Deputy Commissioner of DB Md Shafiqul Islam told a news briefing at the DMP Media Centre in the capital on Wednesday.
He said the two shooters, Faruk and Robin, and their accomplices Shamim, Rubel, and Yusuf were arrested in connection with Mamun’s killing.
Of them, Faruk, Robin, Shamim, and Rubel were arrested from Narsingdi on Tuesday night, while Yusuf was later apprehended from the capital’s Rayerbazar area.
Two foreign pistols, six rounds of ammunition, two magazines, a motorcycle used in the murder, and Tk1.53 lakh in cash were seized during the operations, Islam said.
According to the DB chief, Faruk and Robin shot dead Mamun for Tk2 lakh under Roni’s directives. After committing the murder, Faruk and Robin handed the firearms and bullets to Rubel, following Roni’s instructions, and Rubel subsequently passed them to Yusuf.
Rubel is a rent-a-car trader, while Yusuf works in the trailer business, he added.
