Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said on Saturday that law enforcement agencies have taken all necessary measures to prevent any untoward incidents ahead of the verdict against ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, due on Monday.
“The verdict against Sheikh Hasina and others in the crimes against humanity case must be announced on 17 November. Law enforcement agencies have already completed the required preparations to ensure that no unpleasant incidents occur across the country,” he said, speaking to journalists at the Circuit House in the district.
He also confirmed that the 13th parliamentary election is scheduled for the first half of February, prior to Ramadan. The Election Commission will announce the election schedule, and law enforcement agencies are on standby to maintain security.
“The public and political parties are now focused on the elections. Parties have announced their candidates, and the polls will be conducted peacefully,” he added.
Law enforcement will be deployed for nine days in total – five days before the election, on polling day, and three days after – to ensure law and order. Special operations will also be carried out nationwide prior to the polls.
Around 150,000 police, 550,000 Ansar, 100,000 army personnel, 35,000 Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members, 500 navy personnel, 8,000 Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members, and 4,000 coast guard personnel will be deployed to safeguard the elections, he said.
Earlier, Jahangir visited the Bangladesh Coast Guard base and Patuakhali district Police Lines, and later departed for Kuakata, where he is scheduled to inspect Tourist Police and River Police camps.
