Police submitted a charge sheet against 40 people, including former Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and former food minister Advocate Qamrul Islam, in an attempted murder case filed with the capital's Chawkbazar Police Station.
Police filed the charge sheet with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque. The court after that set January 3 for passing order on taking the charge sheet into cognizance in presence of the complainant.
According to the case documents, on August 5, 2024, a protest rally of students and local residents reached the Bakshi Bazar Alia Madrasa intersection under Chawkbazar Model Police Station. Police reportedly fired tear shells and opened indiscriminate gunfire, causing the protesters to disperse.
The complainant, Fazlur Karim, was allegedly attacked during the chaos and sustained injuries. He later filed the case with Chawkbazar Police Station on October 26, 2024.
