The government will impose restrictions on all cloned, unlawfully imported, and smuggled mobile phones, stated Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, the Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser for the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology, on Wednesday.

He stated that illegal phones are associated with various offences, including improper SIM registration, online scams, bulk SMS fraud, tax and customs evasion, border smuggling, and interference with domestic handset manufacturing, according to a press release from the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology.

Taiyeb observed that once the National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR) becomes completely operational, the unauthorised utilisation of a single International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) across multiple devices will be effectively prevented.

He also stated that the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) is actively working to streamline registration procedures for internationally imported phones through authorised channels and to make legal devices more accessible and affordable.

He stated that phones activated prior to December 16 will be acknowledged as genuine.
Expatriates are permitted to lawfully bring one or two phones without any issues, whereas bringing more than two phones must comply with the regulations of the National Board of Revenue (NBR), he added.
