A court in Chattogram on Thursday sentenced a man to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) for selling government medicines in the open market.

The case was filed under the Special Powers Act for the recovery of government hospital medicines from the open market.

The Fourth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge of the Court of Chattogram, Begum Sirajam Munira, delivered the verdict.

The convicted was Abdul Noor, 40, son of Abdul Motaleb from the Dampara area of the city.

Tribunal Bench Assistant Omar Fuad informed BSS that the case involving the sale of government hospital medicines in the open market resulted in the conviction of Abdul Noor.

Abdul Noor was sentenced to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Taka 10,000 in default, to suffer another three months more in jail.

Noor was arrested on March 25, 2013, in front of the main gate of the KC Dey Road Cinema Palace by the Kotwali police. He was found carrying various types of government hospital medicines, which are prohibited from being sold in the open market.

A case was filed against him with Kotwali Police Station on the same day.  Police submitted a charge sheet on August 18, 2013, and the court framed charges on March 11, 2014.

After examining a total of four out of seven prosecution witnesses, the court passed the verdict in the presence of the convicted person.
