A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck Bangladesh early this morning, prompting people in several towns to run out of their buildings. Regional seismic centres say the quake happened at a depth of about 35 km.

The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) says that on Friday, an earthquake with a magnitude of about 5.7 hit Bangladesh. The depth was only about 10 km, which makes the shaking at the top stronger.

The city, Dhaka, and districts in the northern and central parts of the country felt the shaking forcefully. Three people died after a railing collapsed in Bongshal area; officials are still assessing the situation. The tremor was "sudden" and "alarming", and many people said their furniture and other household items shook for several seconds. As the shaking continued, people in Dhaka's high-rise buildings left the stairwells. There are a lot of earthquakes in Bangladesh because it is in an area where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. Experts warn that even small earthquakes can be very dangerous because of the large number of people living in a small area and the weak infrastructure. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department is monitoring the situation and advising people to remain calm, particularly as minor earthquakes may occur. The authorities have placed the emergency services on high alert.
