Brigadier General (Retd) Abul Fazl Mohammad Sanaullah, Bangladesh's Election Commissioner, remarked on Saturday that the approaching 13th national parliamentary election will revive democracy. He made the comments while giving the opening speech at a workshop at Lakeshore Heights in Gulshan on Saturday morning.
The Asian Network for Free Elections (ANFREL) organised the workshop "Building Bridges: Regional Electoral Governance and Citizen Observation Exchange".
"The 13th parliamentary election will be a historic one – an election that will mark the reinitiation of democracy," the president stated.
Sanaullah expressed hope that a record number of international observers will attend the polls, stating that they want to see a historically significant political process.
He stated that the Election Commission is completely equipped to conduct the much-anticipated elections in a free, orderly, and transparent way.
"A fair, credible and impartial election – this is what the current Commission is prepared to deliver," according to him.
He also stated that combatting misinformation on social media and addressing the misuse of artificial intelligence will be major difficulties in the future election. He stated that the Commission is taking the actions necessary to address these challenges.
The commissioner congratulated participants for participating in and supporting what he termed as the Election Commission's substantial and worthy initiative.
According to EC officials, the calendar for the 13th parliamentary election and referendum could be revealed about 60 days before polling day, which is scheduled to take place in the first half of February, ahead of Ramadan.
While the exact dates have not yet been determined, the Commission has stated that the election timetable could be announced on any day during the first week of December.
