Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Sunday called upon all to remain cautious about earthquakes and said they will try to develop an early warning system for such disasters.
“We all have to be alert about the earthquakes,” he told reporters after attending the regular meeting of the Core Committee on law and order at the Home Ministry in the Bangladesh Secretariat.
The Home Adviser stated that Bangladesh lacks an early earthquake warning system, unlike several other countries.
“Many countries have apps that give warnings 10 seconds before the possible earthquakes. We are thinking of developing such apps in the future,” he said.
Jahangir continued that they will hold discussions with experts about it.
The Home Adviser also called upon all to maintain building codes while constructing buildings. “Otherwise, the future situation will be more adverse,” he added.
Expressing concern over constructing buildings by filling up the waterbodies, he requested RAJUK to look into the matter before approving any plan.
Jahangir said that the Fire Service and Civil Defence are prepared to deal with major earthquakes, and that the fire service has already responded promptly to minor incidents.
However, the potential response to major earthquakes can only be assessed after such significant incidents take place, he added.
Bangladesh on Friday and Saturday experienced four earthquakes, leaving at least 10 people dead, scores of others injured, anSeveral buildings were tilted, triggering widespread concern across the country.
