Planning Adviser Wahiduddin Mahmud emphasised on Wednesday the importance of technical assistance and coordinated actions to promote the growth of the country’s livestock sector.

As the inaugural keynote speaker for National Livestock Week 2025, he stated that researchers are actively trying to enhance the sector.

He also emphasised the critical role of farmers in national growth through livestock rearing, with women making especially significant contributions.

The event was organised by the Department of Livestock Services of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre.

Wahiduddin Mahmud, who inaugurated the week, stated that National Livestock Week would play an important role in developing the sector.  He stated that cattle husbandry benefits marginalised populations and strengthens the economy.

He urged farmers to avoid inhumane treatment of animals and emphasised the need for entrepreneurs to provide healthy feed and immunisation support for the sector’s continued growth.

The welcome speech was presented by the ministry’s secretary, Abu Tahir Muhammad Zaber, while Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter presided.

Speaking at the event, Farida Akhter stated that men and women around the country have found success by raising indigenous livestock.

Domestic entrepreneurs are playing a crucial role by raising not only numerous varieties of livestock around the country, but also ducks, chickens, and goats, which provide jobs for millions of people, she said.

She also emphasised the importance of developing appropriate policies for this area.

Dr Md Abu Sufian, Director General of the Department of Livestock Services, as well as several farmers, spoke at the event.

A statement from Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on the day was read out at the gathering.

During the ceremony, 15 individuals were presented with cash prizes as well as bronze, silver, and gold medals in categories such as livestock rearing, poultry farming, animal and animal products, livestock development and management, and marginal farmers and women.
