As a result of the government’s new policy, Agriculture Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has said that all illegal fertiliser sellers will be shut down across the country.

“But the current legal dealers will keep doing business,” he told reporters about the general state of agriculture in the country after a meeting to review the Annual Development Program (ADP) at the Agriculture Ministry in Bangladesh Secretariat today.

According to a ministry news release, the adviser also said that new dealers would only be hired in places where there aren’t any already.

When he talked about current problems in agriculture, he said that falling potato prices have caused many farmers to lose money this season.

About half of the paddy in Aman has already been gathered, and if the weather is good, the crop should produce a lot.

When asked about fertiliser problems, Jahangir, who was also Home Adviser, said that the country has enough fertiliser supplies and there are no shortages.

He also said that changes in the price of petrol don’t affect the price of fertiliser. This means that farmers will continue to get fertiliser at fair prices.

The adviser said that some groups are putting pressure on the onion market to let imports happen by making the market look unstable.

Onion imports have been temporarily stopped, though, because the government wants to focus on local production and fair prices for farmers.

He was sure that there would be no onion problem since summer onions were already on the market and were supposed to arrive in large numbers next month.

Moreover, he made it clear that all hiring processes in the Agriculture Ministry and its related offices will be open and honest.

At the meeting, Dr Mohammad Emdad Ullah Mian, who is the secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, was also present.
