BNP Chairperson and former three-time Prime Minister Khaleda Zia remains under intensive monitoring at the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) of Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. Party leaders say her condition remains critical, but she is conscious, and she is able to recognise close associates. Doctors, however, believe she requires more advanced treatment.
Across the country, BNP leaders, supporters, and well-wishers are holding prayers seeking her recovery. Special prayer sessions have been organised in mosques and many on social media are recalling her long, uncompromising political struggle and wishing for her improved health.
Amid the crisis, Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus has been receiving regular updates on her condition. Officials say he has instructed all concerned to ensure the highest level of medical care. BNP’s acting chairman, Tarique Rahman has expressed gratitude for what he described as the Chief Adviser’s “humane role” during this period.
Late Friday night (28 November), Legal Affairs Adviser Prof Asif Nazrul and Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser Monir Haider visited the hospital to check on Khaleda Zia’s condition. In a Facebook post, Asif Nazrul wrote, “Her condition is very poor. Please pray for her.”
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee members Mirza Abbas, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, and Selima Rahman also visited the CCU. Speaking to reporters after the visit, Mirza Abbas said, “At this moment, in my personal assessment, she is not stable. With more advanced treatment, she may improve. She recognised us, and responded when we greeted her.”
Dr Moyeen Khan added, “Doctors have reviewed her condition thoroughly. They are taking every measure required.”
Earlier on Friday afternoon, Mirza Fakhrul told the media—referring to briefings from her medical team—that Khaleda Zia’s condition is extremely critical.
A medical board comprising local and foreign specialists continues to supervise her treatment inside the CCU. Nearly 80 years old, Khaleda Zia has long been suffering from multiple chronic complications. She was admitted to the hospital on 23 November after developing a lung infection and heart-related complications.
The BNP has urged its leaders and activists not to gather in front of the hospital, citing the need to maintain a calm environment for treatment and avoid unnecessary crowding.
