A court in Dhaka found Sheikh Hasina, the ousted Prime Minister of Bangladesh, guilty and sentenced her to five years in prison on Monday. Her sister, Sheikh Rehana, was also found guilty and sentenced to seven years in prison. The case was brought against a total of seventeen individuals due to irregularities in the allocation of a 10-katha plot in the RAJUK Purbachal New Town Project.
The verdict was handed down by Judge Robiul Alam of the Dhaka Special Judge Court-4, who also handed down a sentence of two years in prison for Tulip Siddique, who is Rehana’s daughter.
Earlier, the court started its hearings at 11:30 in the morning, and it promptly began reading out the judgement without further delay.
Both the prosecution and the defence finished their arguments in the case on November 25, so the court scheduled Monday to pronounce judgement.
Md Salahuddin, the Deputy Director of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), initiated the legal proceeding on January 13, 2025, against a total of fifteen individuals, among them were Sheikh Hasina, Sheikh Rehana, and Tulip Siddique. It was on March 10 that the IO and Assistant Director of the ACC, Afnan Jannat Keya, presented a charge sheet against seventeen individuals who were implicated.
On July 31, Dhaka Special Judge Court-4 framed charges in this case together with two others, and on the same day, Dhaka Special Judge Court-5 framed charges in three other instances that were identical to this one.
