A direct rail service between Pabna and Dhaka is anticipated to start in March 2026, according to a senior official from Bangladesh’s road transport and bridges ministry.
Sheik Moinuddin, special assistant to the chief adviser at the ministry, told reporters on Tuesday that preparations were on to begin the line, despite a current scarcity of railway carriages.
Speaking at the Pakshi Divisional Railway Office in Pabna, he stated that the coach deficit was likely to be remedied shortly, paving the way for the new service to begin.
Mr Moinuddin also stated that the government will study a railway station established to deliver materials for the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant before making a final decision on its future usage.
Outlining broader transport plans, he stated that the government planned to create a modern, integrated communications network that connected canals, railways, and roadways. He noted that work has already begun to enlarge important roadways and enhance district-level linking highways to four lanes.
He stated that the government’s top objective was to widen Pabna’s main Abdul Hamid Road.
Mr Moinuddin also mentioned numerous projects that are being considered, including the Aricha-Khaschar ferry link, the Pakshi-Badherhat road expansion, and the Kashinathpur-Ullapara road widening project. He also mentioned that a flyover would be built to relieve congestion at the Ishwardi rail gate.
During the visit, local BNP officials such as Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas and Habibur Rahman Habib voiced long-standing concerns for greater communication in the area.
Mr Moinuddin landed in Ishwardi on Monday and visited the Rooppur Nuclear Power Project and the North Bengal Paper Mill School on Tuesday, both of which he said were associated with his student days. Several local residents, business leaders, and officials from the Western Railway Division were present.
