In a decision issued on Thursday, the High Court (HC) directed the relevant authorities to digitise the entire marriage and divorce registration process in the country.

A High Court Division bench consisting of Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Md Ashif Hasan issued the decision following a hearing on a writ petition filed in this regard.

Advocate Ishrat Hasan presented the plea to the court.

"The court's decision would serve as a historic step towards ensuring family security, women's protection, preventing child marriage, increasing legal transparency, and, most importantly, reducing marriage and divorce fraud," advocate Ishrat told reporters.

She stated that once digital registration is implemented, issues such as secret marriages, concealment of multiple marriages, withholding previous information, and difficulties in proving divorce will be greatly reduced.

"This would strengthen citizens' social dignity, promote justice, and help rebuild mutual trust in society," she said.

The writ petition was filed on March 4, 2021, by Supreme Court lawyer Ishrat Hasan on behalf of the four victims.
