Sharif Osman Hadi, an independent candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency and spokesperson of the Inqilab Mancha, was shot ahead of his election campaign. On Friday (December 12), he was injured by gunfire from assailants while preparing to conduct campaign activities in the Bijoynagar Culvert Road area after Jummah prayers.
He was taken to the Emergency Department of Dhaka Medical College (DMC) Hospital at 2:35 PM in a gunshot-wounded condition. He is currently admitted to the One Stop Crisis Centre (OCC) of the emergency department.
Following the incident, security measures at Dhaka Medical College Hospital have been intensified, with additional police forces and four platoons of army personnel deployed. Army members have also taken positions at the entrance of the emergency department. This heightened security presence was observed in the DMC area on Friday afternoon.
On-the-ground observations show that multiple army vehicles entered the hospital premises shortly before 4:00 PM, while police presence had already been increased earlier.
Dr Mostak Ahmed, Resident Surgeon of the Emergency Department at DMC Hospital, stated that Hadi’s condition was extremely critical when he was brought in, and CPR had to be administered. He sustained gunshot injuries to the head, with a bullet lodged inside his head, as well as injuries around his ear. According to the hospital director’s office, due to his critical condition, Hadi has been placed on life support.
When contacted Friday afternoon, Dhaka Medical College Director Brigadier General Md Asaduzzaman confirmed that Hadi’s condition remains critical and that he is currently on life support.
Earlier, Deputy Commissioner of the DMP Public Relations Division, Muhammad Talebur Rahman, told Jugantor that after Jummah prayers at around 2:25 PM, attackers arriving on a motorcycle shot Hadi in the Bijoynagar Box Culvert area and fled the scene.
