India has rejected claims that its territory has been used for activities against the interests of Bangladesh, insisting it remains committed to supporting a peaceful and credible election process in the country.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs on Sunday, India said it had never allowed its soil to be utilised for actions that could undermine Bangladesh’s security or democratic institutions.

The response came after Bangladesh summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma earlier in the day to convey concerns over alleged anti-election activities involving political figures residing in India.

New Delhi said it expected Bangladesh’s interim government to ensure internal law and order and to take all necessary steps to facilitate elections that are free, fair, inclusive and credible.

The Indian government emphasised that the conduct of peaceful elections in Bangladesh was of paramount importance and said it looked forward to continued cooperation with Dhaka in this regard.

India also dismissed certain requests made by the interim government, reiterating its long-standing position that it does not permit its territory to be used in ways that harm Bangladesh’s interests.
