On Monday, the prosecution of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) filed an appeal with the Supreme Court's Appellate Division, requesting an increase in the sentence imposed on former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

For their conviction on specific counts of crimes against humanity committed during the July Mass Uprising, the appeal requested that their sentence of imprisonment until natural death be upgraded to the death penalty.

Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim earlier stated, "The prosecution will file the appeal with the Appellate Division today," citing a press conference later in the day but refusing to provide further details.

Using the theory of superior command responsibility, ICT-1 found Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal guilty on November 17 of crimes against humanity during the July Mass Uprising.

They were found guilty on several charges by the three-member tribunal, which was presided over by Justice Golam Mortuza Mozumder.

Both Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal were sentenced to prison until their natural deaths after the court found them guilty of three counts under charge number one.

They were also found guilty of three counts under charge number two and given the death penalty for those crimes.

After taking into account his complete disclosure of events and cooperation with investigators as an approver, the tribunal also found former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun guilty of the same charges but gave him a light sentence of five years in prison.

The tribunal also mandated that Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal's properties be seized in the state's favour and instructed the authorities to provide sufficient compensation to the families of the July martyrs and injured individuals.
