UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the killing of Sharif Osman Hadi and urged Bangladesh to conduct a prompt, impartial, and transparent investigation in accordance with international human rights standards.
At a regular press briefing in New York on Friday, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said the Secretary-General also urged restraint as Bangladesh prepares for February 2026 parliamentary elections.
Guterres advised all parties to “refrain from violence, reduce tensions and exercise maximum restraint in order to preserve a peaceful electoral environment.”
After Hadi was shot on December 12, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said he was “deeply troubled” by the killing.
Türk said in Geneva that “retaliation and revenge will only deepen divisions and undermine the rights of all,” calling for accountability.
